Rivelin Valley

On Sunday morning, with the wind howling outside of my bedroom window, the plan to go for a walk once we had dropped the DQ of at work did not sound appealing, however, once out and about, the sun came out, the sky was blue and so off we went. We wanted to stay local to save petrol, so we headed up to Rivelin Valley.
The river Rivelin is one of the five rivers of Sheffield, and was once a very industrialised river. I don't think Ive ever seen as many mill ponds in as short a length of river.

None of the industry remains now and Mother Nature has claimed back the river and surrounding woodlands making it a fabulous and fairly easy walk. Its 2 miles from one end to the other and has a car park at each end.

Most of the mill ponds were still frozen over.

And you can still see evidence of the many different types of mills that were on this stretch.

I loved the information wheels that were at each point of interest.

The water in the river is full of Peat as it is straight off the Derbyshire Moors. There are some fantastic places to picnic and paddle - when the weather gets warmer.

It also has a really great cafe (like most of Sheffield parks do these days) where you can get delicious sandwiches, coffee or a lovely meal - at Yorkshire prices (ie value for money!!). It was lovely to see so many families out and about enjoying the weather, the countryside and each others company. Ive ordered some more sunshine for next weekend.

Just my kind of walk, a bit of industrial history and a bit of nature with a car park at each end! I think travelling very far to go for walks is going to have to be thought about very carefully this year which is a great shame as I really like to get out of the city. I'm looking forward to that sunshine you've ordered:)

when we stayed in Yorkshire last year, it had been raining quite a lot before we arrived, and the water was all brown. It was perfectly safe, but it did look a bit odd when you sat in the bath surrounded by brown water!
Lovely photos and looking forward to having another sunny weekend coming up - thanks for that ;-)

Two miles each way? I could do that walk, and probably will now. Thank you. :-)

Thanks for the beautiful walk. nature can be wonderful at times like in your post where it has reclaimed the river but in our case nature has been harmful in throwing the worst floods in history at us this week.

I hope your order arrives, I could do with some sunshine rather than the rain and wind we've got today. The walk looks really interesting with all the information you can pick up along the way.

What a lovely walk - a mix of old industrial and nature, and some sunshine too to go with it!

Lovely pics, Diane. I remember the Rivelin Valley from my days in Sheffield (too long ago now). You have some beautiful countryside near you.

Such amazing photos! You should be selling these to a travel magazine. Every time I see some of your pics, I want to go on vacation and follow you on your walks since you know all the best spots to visit! :)

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record but 'I've never walked in the Rivelin Valley'. Is it the one at the bottom of Walkey or is that the Loxley? I always get them mixed up. If it's near Walkley I really have no excuse as Neil lived there for several yearsbefore they moved to Suffolk. I'm going to make a list of places to go and explore in Sheffield and actually go and see some of them this summer!

Don't think we are going to be getting any sun this weekend, hope you order is more successful. Can you get an order in now for our date in March?!
I like it when you find info about what was going on in these places years ago.

It's not the easiest place for me to get to but I have done the walk, and even on a miserable day it's beautiful.

Can you order me some nice sunshine for my next walk in the Peak District?

Hello, I am doing a website for my best friend, who is based in Sheffield and makes handmade jewellery inspired by her love of the Rivelin valley. Is there any possibility that she could use some of your beautiful photos on her website? You would, of course, be credited. Thanks, Helen.
