Looking for a new relationship

I have written on here many times before about my hair and hairdressers.  When I was young I had the same hairdresser for years  - she "got me" and kept me trendy with suggestions and skillful cuts.  She became a friend, and I used to "model" for her at competitions - until the fateful time that she dyed my hair Aubergine and shaved it off up to half way up the back of my head!!!!!???? What was she thinking?  Since then, I have struggled to find a hairdresser who can remain "interested" in me for more that half a dozen cuts.  What is it with them?  I have a very long list of failed relationships with hairdressers. I had been with my latest hairdresser for above 2 years, and whilst she cut it nicely, I could tell she had lost interest a long time ago.  On several visits, she never answered the phone when she was cutting hair, and when she wasn't cutting hair, she was outside having a crafty smoke - so it was no surprise that it was becoming impossible to ring and book an appointment.  And so before Christmas, I tried somewhere else.
This wasn't a great success.  The salon was newish and very trendy, but my stylist was very very young and lacking in confidence, and when confronted with a ditherer like me, got a bit scared and only cut a centimetre  off.
This week, I decided to treat myself to a cut at a very expensive salon in our nearby Shopping Mall.  They grade their stylist, so I went the whole hog and asked for a senior stylist and was booked with "Rebecca".  On arrival, my daughter thought that the chap who sat me in the chair and didn't even try to feign interest in me, was the cleaner.  I don't think for one minute he was called Rebecca.  He rubbished all my ideas, he "told" me what he was going to do, washed it, cut it and dried it, wittering on all the time about himself and his plans to get his own salon etc etc  He tried to charge me £49!!!!  when a huge sign in the window clearly said that they had an offer on for £30 that day.  No, I shan't be going back there either.
And because Michela will ask - here is the style I ended up with this week!
So I have another couple of months before I decide where to try next.

Oh Diane, I am totally with you on this.

I rarely get my hair cut, hence why it is so long and tatty! The past couple of times I have been for a wet trim at a salon a few minutes walk from my house as it's cheap and not much can go wrong.

I went to a wonderful salon when I was younger and then found a really great mobile hairdresser who I went to for many years. She kept my blonde hair fabulous and always knew what I wanted when I tried to describe the latest style I wanted.

Then I went back to my natural hair colour and never saw her again as I had no real need to get my hair done every 4 weeks.

I would like to book in somewhere to get a proper cut and maybe a bit of colour too, but everywhere just seems so rubbish! :(

Sorry for the essay. You can tell I am passionate about this subject can't you! haha. X

Well...it's very flattering and obviously a good cut. But I'm with you, they should show more interest . I was only telling a friend the other day that my hairdresser has started taking me for granted (talking to other people while cutting my hair, wandering off, getting a junior to do the wash/head massage etc)and I was thinking of finding someone different.
It's expensive and supposedly Me Time so I don't think we're asking for much!
(Not sure I've commented before but I'm a long time lurker in any case) Dawn

That's why I haven't been to a hairdresser for 13 years! I'd rather cut my own hair for nothing! It does mean my style never changes but I have rubbish hair so nothing else could really be done with it anyway!

Your hair looks really nice but I'd have demanded to see 'Rebecca' or at least another senior stylist!

Good luck finding a new hairdresser.

You look great!

I'm sticking with Michael (my hairdresser) and the salon (not his, he's the Artistic Director!) as I cannot fault either and visit every 5 weeks. Have had many bad experiences with others over the years though, including the memorable time my cousin's then hairdresser girlfriend gave me a 'trim'.

Your hair does look nice but I know what you mean. My hairdresser is local and inexpensive, my hair is very short and I go about every 5 weeks. I really want my hair to be much less boring, I tell her to chop it up as much as she wants but it never happens. Still better than the cut I had last year at the men's barber in our village in Italy. Keep up the search for the perfect hairdresser.

I personally think you look gorgeous!I rarely touch my hair, I'm always afraid to, I get it cut about once a year... IF that!
And then I always say "Just trim it", and it's a lottery as to what I will get!
Have a great week!

It's a very good cut.
I can't bear self centred hairdressers. Sadly since returning from France I haven't found the ideal salon. The best cut I ever had was near Bordeaux, with Patric, who was an absolute artist!

Hi Diane, I think your hair looks great but sympathize with your experience.
I get mine cut locally in an " old lady " salon but my hairdresser is great ....we are good friends now.
I went their after asking my midwife to recommend somewhere local when I was pregnant with my first. I just had a wet trim as I was breastfeeding and didn't want to be away too long....still having a wet trim 12 years later :0)....seems silly to pay for a blow dry now.

I think this looks wonderful!!! I had long hair all my life ...then finally after really waiting too long my sister finally pinned me down and said it's time!!
Boy was she right!! I look soooooo much better now..I luckily have a wonderful gal and she does a great job...long hair looked great for a long time but it just didn't suit me any more..I really love the cut I have now...youthful ..as much as possible anyway....shoulder length layered at the bottom so it flips up!!

Oh, it looks very nice on you. Very pretty :D When I was living at my other house, there was this hair salon near me where a lady, who usually did haircuts for older women in their 70s and 80s, where I sometimes went for aquick cut. I don't go back to her. She cuts my hair too short and makes me look older than I am. But that looks suits you nicely :D

I really love your new haircut Diane, it makes your fab smile even more cheeky!
Your fringe will need to be cut in only 2 weeks though :-)

I've always been apprehensive about hairdressers. It stems from when as a child I used to be taken to have my hair cut and the woman used to make me kneel on a chair over the sink and hold my head down as she cut and she used to snap at me if I moved or wriggled which I did because I was uncomfortable. Like you I've tried many different hairdressers and have only in the last few years felt truly comfortable getting my hair cut. I go to Supercuts and if I get there early enough I can usually get the stylist I like and feel comfortable with. I missed her last time and I had to cut my own fringe a few weeks ago as the other stylist hadn't taken enough off. I love your new style - very chic and French looking:)

The experience sounds awful but the cut looks very good. Very up to date and attractive.

I like it :)

I know what you mean though about the hairdresser. I have a friend who does mine and I don't know what I'd do without her. She's been coming to my house every Thursday teatime for over 20 years. I think I'd go into total meltdown if she retires!

You have a lovely hairstyle, it definitely suits you. I am very lucky to have a hairdresser who worked at my salon then set up alone - I only pay £32 for cut and colour and she is always full of ideas and never tries to typecast me. My hubby has his cut there for £8. I once did hairdressing myself in another life, in basic training you judge face shapes/hair type and a bit of typecasting goes on but as your stylist gets to know your taste and style the hairdo evolves! what you don't want though is a stylist who talks about himself too much, betty

Well, the end result looks lovely - but I do know exactly what you mean. Time and again you think you've found somebody good and then after few visits they start talking to other people, and letting a junior do the blow-drying and not even looking at your hair while they cut it. Mine has got longer and longer without me wanting it to, as they trim less off each time. I think it's time I went elsewhere too but the trouble is knowing where...

I know what you mean - a good hairdresser is hard to find. When I lived with my parents my school friend cut my hair, she was a trained hairdresser and was very good. I then moved to the South of England and for 13 years - never found a good stylist. I now go to a salon in Somerset - the hairdresser is good and it's better value than the expensive salons in Hampshire. I like your bob though.

you do look cute though!

I'm not much help regarding hairdressers. My hairdresser has been doing my hair for 25 years, she was the one who gave me my corkscrew perm in the 80s. We are like friends really, I go in for a chat and come out with a hair cut, whats more shes cut my Mums hair for as long too.
And she can talk for Britain, maybe thats what you need, someone who likes to chat!!

I sometimes think that hairdressers forget that have so much power in their hands. They can boost your self esteem or destroy it completely in the space of 20 minutes. It makes no difference that if they make a mess of your hair it will grow again !!

My current hairdresser is helpful, consistent, reliable and reasonable. An absolute Godsend and I dread the day she decides to move on.

Your hair looks beautiful, Diane - I like seeing a photo of you on your blog!
It's a problem, isn't it, finding the right hairdresser. I love mine, I've been going to her for a few years now so we are at a point of having a proper chat and catch-up rather than those awful "going anywhere nice on holiday?" conversations. And she does my hair how I like it, she listens, she's good at what she does, and she doesn't appear bored, even if she is privately! She's pricey though - but I think she's worth it! I'll stalk her if she ever has the temerity to leave! xxxx

Firstly I think it looks great!!! However the experience sounds awful. It is SO difficult to find a good hairdresser, I guess all you can do is keep trying different ones and hopefully before long you'll find the right one.

You look fab Mrs!
I have hated going to the hairdressers in the past, now I have one who is more of a freind, and who doesnt mind me turning the mirror away. I hate having to look to myself....
Posting you my daughter, she will be the ideal mini me matching hair cut accessory.

I do like your new "do" even though the experience wasn't pleasant. Its interesting to know this problem is world wide. I've had the same problem for years. I once had it cut in Singapore by a young man who sat on a stool that he could whizz around me on, but he also kept hitting the gas-lift on it and going up and down like a crazed horse on a magic roundabout. I was dizzy by the end of it. It took him over 2 hours to do a "trim" and I only had shoulder length hair. And he never used scissors either - did the whole thing with a razor blade - as you can imagine it wasn't worth the cost. Never again!
Now I've found a lovely lady who works from home and does a wonderful job at half the price of most salons. Just hope she doesn't retire. Good luck with your next experience.
