Not quite on the doorstep, but only a quick 40 minute drive away is the gorgeous city of York. It was hubby's suggestion for a day trip, so off we went.
Our morning started with breakfast in Betty's - a bit expensive, but now that there are only 2 of us on our days out, it actually feels affordable!!!
York is a beautiful old city - full of fabulous shops, cobbled streets, and amazing buildings. The Shambles is its most famous cobbled old street.
It was difficult to get a good photo of it as the sky was very grey and cloudy, although it was nice and warm. A lot of my photos came out fairly dark.
We had a lovely wander around the streets. Come and have a wander with me.
York has some really well preserved buildings from as far back as the Roman times. 
I'll show you more of York later in the week.

looking forward to reading more! I've walked through the shambles and visited Jorvik and the minster on a school trip (taking children, not when I was at school!) but have not yet got round to visiting it on my own schedule!
ReplyDeleteI love visiting York, haven't been for ages though. Did you see the mirror with the WW2 servicemen's signatures at Betty's? I shall go in the autumn when there are fewer tourists around I think - there's so much to see and do it might even be worth an overnight stay:)
ReplyDeleteI love York too! I just felt a bit of a pang because I haven't been this year, but we're going for a few days just before Christmas ... it's a bit of a tradition! Looking forward to your next set of photos!

ReplyDeleteOh, York - I love it! Lucky you to have breakfast at Betty's. Like Kathy it was always a family tradition to go shopping there before Christmas and I miss that. I love Barley Hall but the wonderful Georgian coffee house next to it closed quite a while ago I think. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your visit:)xxx

ReplyDeleteYork is one of my favourite places and we are so lucky to have it pretty close by! Bettys is such a treat but I love it so, their banana and toffee pancakes are the best thing ever (after Cornish pasties and cream teas, obviously!) x

I know all those places sooooo well, and miss them terribly.
Can you believe I only lived a short 10-15 mins walk away from the city? I must have been bonkers to leave.

ReplyDeleteLove it ,went two years ago with Dave for a long weekend and l loved the shambles too,l found a wool shop and quilt shop oh and a shop with lots of buttons and Dave went to the viking exibition we would love to go back again soon thank you for stirring my memories.
