Morningtown Ride





When I was was little, I used to listen to the radio much more than I do now - something I will have to redress. I used to spend a lot of time with my Grandma, Grandad and Great Grandad - I loved their house and their company. We used to listen to "Junior Choice" which played songs requested by children for children. Tony Blackburn was the DJ at one point - in fact at the point when his wife left him and I remember him sorrowfully going on about missing his son - I even remember him weeping at one point!! I think they axed the show shortly after that! I think its sad that children don't listen to songs like these any more - Ive selected you a few of my favourites, and if you click on them, you will be transported back to Saturday mornings in the 1960's. What were your favourites?

    What a great post ... I was instantly taken back to my childhood. We used to sing all those songs in the car on days out ... no car radios back then. We also sang everything from the Sound of Music, and Doris Day songs were also popular. Whip Crack Away and all that! Do you remember Inchworm and the Ugly Duckling by Danny Kaye too? We always listened to the radio ... (actually I still do) ... and I seem to remember Two Way Family Favourites was on on a Sunday morning.... followed by the Jimmy Clitheroe Show ... showing my age now!

    Oh Oh - my nan and gramps used to always sing Gillygilly Ossenfeffen Katzenellen bogan - by the sea. I have never heard anyone say it before and certainly never seen it written down...I think I thought they made it up! Same as "Maisy Dotes and Dosey Dotes and little lamsy tivy!?" That is what I thought I was singing anway...can you guess? Great post!

    You might have been listening to them in the 60's Diane, but I definitely remember all these songs from my childhood in the 70's. I could still cry when I hear Puff the Magic Dragon (I bought Violet a beautifully illustrated book of Puff, that also included a CD of the song).
    My dad always used to sing songs to me - I particularly remember Don Maclean's American Pie, Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree, Save all your Kisses for Me..... (I think you get the idea).

    Puff the Magic Dragon always made me cried and I have just discovered it still does!!! I loved Rolf singing two little boys and The Runanway Train, remember them?

    Not sure whether it was intended as a children's song or not, but Sugar Sugar by The Archies. If it came on the radio in a shop I would say Sugar Sugar Mummy and dance away apparently.

    ooh Diane (Heart Shaped) remember the 'wireless' sooo much. Being a child of the 60's I remember my father plaing Sing Something Simple, oh I hated that programme!
    But you brought back many memories of the children's songs... I probably still know a lot of the words. Fred Said Fred.. was a favourite too.

    How wonderful - well that has cheered me up after my strange day! I was a child in the fifties so used to listen to 'Listen with Mother' 'Toytown' and 'Children's Favourites' with Uncle Mac. I remember all those songs plus 'I'm a Pink Tooth brush, you're a Blue tooth brush' 'Tuby the Tuba' 'Tulips from Amsterdam' 'Sparky and his Magic piano' 'Green Door', 'Runaway Train' 'How much is that doggy in the window' and 'All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth' - loads more I'm sure - those were the days:)

    you've done it again Diane - I LOVED that song by The Seekers.

    Then came The New Seekers - I loved 'Beg, Steal or Borrow' and had a huge crush on the tall blonde fella - can't even remember his name now though!!

    But I never could say 'Gillygilly Ossenfeffen Katzenellen bogan - by the sea'!!!!!!!! LOL

    Ha, I remember all those! Such memories. The first posters I had on my bedroom wall were the Seekers and Dusty Springfield. Do you remember "The Laughing Policeman"? It used to make me cry! But I liked that one about the gasman coming to call - Flanders and Swan was it?

    Oh I remember them well! We used to have a tv with a dial for the programmes and it had radio as well, which thinking about it now seems very ahead of it's time. Like Kathy ^ Sunday's meant Two Way Family Favourites and also Billy Cotton's Band Show.

    There is only 4 of those that I have heard before, living in Africa I guess we did not get everything there. We did get Puff the Magic Dragon though and I have just felt like a kid again listening to it. Thanks. Diane

    How wonderful to see and hear all those wonderful songs again! I was transported straight back to my childhood - it all seemed so simple then! I remembered them all and have just had a lovely time singing along! Thank you for a little bit of Wednesday morning nostalgia!

    Ah blast from the past. I also remember Lily the Pink, Have you got a light boy, Catch a Falling Star and Stupid Cupid. I am still a radio girl and prefer it to the TV.

    Ah, I had the record (45) of Puff the Magic Dragon, along with Grandad sung by Clive Dunn, and Teddy Bear's Picnic, Two Little Boys - Rolf Harris. Happy memories.

    Loved all the songs Diane brought back loads of memories, espeaically 3 wheels on my wagon do you remember your Dad & Steven doing a song called Whistling Jack Smith at our wedding wearing gaint size hats over their heads & using their belly buttons for their mouths.

    Yay for Morningtown - My Mum would sinh it to us and also a song with the lines"Woke up this morning and my Mama was gone...." I think it was the Cheep cheep song? chirrpa chirrpa cheep cheep!

    Oh I totally loved Juniour choice - a friend of mine did one of those taped request thingies. Funnily enough, I've been singing A mouse lived in a Windmill today as they sang a couple of lines on five live this morning !

    Camp Granada was a real favourite. I remember Ed "Stewpot" Stuart was the presenter.

    This brings back Memories - I also remember hearing Tony B crying on the radio after his wife left him, and feeling so sorry for him! Also remember eating Sunday lunch whilst listening to two-way Family Favourites, and hating the Cliff Adam Singers - which my father adored But after that finished it was Alan Freeman Pick of the |Pops, so worth the agony beforehand!!
    I'm so glad I was a teenager in the sixties - magical! Angie

    Ooooohh - we sang all these as well and I insisted that my own kids sang them too in the back of the car going on hols. We have the seekers cd and know all the words! Hope they'll sing Morningtown Ride with their own kids ... when they have 'em.
