The wrong words

My kids constantly roll their eyes at me when I unknowingly sing "the wrong words" to songs - like my dad used to do when I was little. My most famous gaff was to Fat Boy Slims - Funk Soul Brother. I thought he was singing "Punk Sold Rubber". When they asked me why did I think the Punk was selling rubber, I replied that I thought he must have a drug problem and was raising cash - it made perfect sense to me!
My daughter used to make me laugh when she was little singing along to Olivia Newton John in Grease - "Your the one that I want - You are the Volauvent - do do do" (she'll kill me when she reads this!)

Edited to include Hubby's " Nine stone Cowboy" by Glen Cambell!!!

Also - my kids just love this

There are loads and as I get older I tend to miss-hear loads of things - when I had my ears tested recently they said 'suffering from 'wear and tear'! One we used to sing - years ago - was 'you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel, four hundred children...etc'

Hi - just found your lovely blog - I have heart-shaped stones just like those (I use mine as paper-weights). Anyway - that song from years ago "Chanson d'amour" followed with "Je t'adore" which my uncle always sang as "Shut that door" ! Still makes me smile when I hear it.

Bless her heart! She really thought that song was called Ken Lee!
I used to have a slow cooker, but gave it away as I just didn't use it very much since I started cooking more vegetarian foods.
G bought me and MP3 player for my birthday last year so I even get to listen to the radio on the bus to work which can help block out some very inane conversations!

Thats so funny Diane. When I worked at JLP the display team all use to sing "check it out now, Franks older brother"!
and I still sing it like that if I hear it now!

I was quite the opposite! When I was young (more years ago than you want to think about!) the music department in our local Department Store sold not only records (78's - no CD's then!) but also the music sheets, with of course the words of the song on. I would go down and read the song sheets until I had the words off by heart!

Ah! Those were the days - proper tunes and real words ;)

Diane - mine is as recent as today - I have had to check Google as I've been hearing a song on the way to work and been thinking, they CAN'T be singing that...

It's Keane, 'Stop for a Minute'. They're actually singing 'without you I'm a liner stranded in an icefloe' but I've been hearing 'without you I'm a lion who's stranded in an a**hole'...

Oh dear.

I just love the nine stone cowboy!! It made me laugh out loud when I read it. Glen Campbell's song will never be the same again after this.

Loads, but the one I remember best is Michael Jackson's Billy Jean. I always sung "but that Jed is not my son" instead of "but the kid is not my son" My friend who is the most ardent fan of MJ used to get sooo cross with me hee hee

Hi Diane,

Thanks for the comment on my blog!

I always have and always will hear; "come and eat your bacon now" in the REM song 'Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight'. In fact I have no idea what the actual lyrics are supposed to be!

I love the Grease mis-hear, I think I might use that one from now on! *g*

Thanks for the giggle, mine don't really sing wrong words (mind you I do tend to turn off a bit whilst they are singing away) but my little boy did once tell us (when he was 4) that the school had some new rhinos. We were a bit confused for a while thinking they were expanding the school into a safari park until we realised he meant some new urinals.
