One place that has been on my "list" for a long time is Burgh island which is joined by a causeway at low tide to the beach at Bigbury on Sea. So we went. The beaches in this part of Devon are difficult to get to - down very long narrow lanes, but they are worth the effort.
The old pub on the island is lovely too. This appears to be owned by the hotel.
However, whilst you are permitted to wander around the island, the art deco gates of the hotel remain firmly closed to non residents. And so my dream of lolling around on a Lloyd Loom chair, sipping a cuppa wasn't fulfilled, and with rooms ranging from £350-£600 per night it looks like it never will.
The young man laughed at me once more when I sighed over the "Forthcoming Events" and expressed a strong desire to attend the "Gershwin Extravaganza".

Perhaps it's just as well. I seem to remember that the place is a hive of of visitors with murderous intentions.

It is familiar from dramas like Poirot, isn't it? Looks wonderful, maybe one day your dream will come true and you will lounge on the terrace sipping tea from a china cup as you gaze out to sea:)
Oh I have been there for afternoon tea - in my head - I have been across on the tractor though - a long time ago. Oh if only they would let me in.
We visited there last year and had a drink at the Pilchard, it was so cosy and it was raining outside, just lovely.
I have often sat on the beach and looked out at burgh island wanting to go over and visit it. It is something I will have to do!
We very nearly went there for our honeymoon......still not got there will have to save the pennies...maybe a big anniversary?!
I love the Pilchard Inn though, the sign is great, very vintage!

I would love a good snoop round it too. Fell in lvoe with it when I saw the movie Evil Under the Sun.

Oh my goodness, you're taking me to some lovely places I remember so well. Burgh Island and Bigbury on Sea, and that tractor. Great memories!
Some great photographs of the island here! I have a particular fondness for Burgh Island and Bigbury on Sea in general, having been there on holiday ever summer as a child.
