Sutton Scardsale Hall

Everytime we head down the M1 I am intrigued by this place. It is just visible from the motorway just as you get into Derbyshire, and so last time we headed south, I insisted on getting off the track and find out all about it. It turns out to be owned by English Heritage and is called Sutton Scarsdale Hall . We found it easily and there is no admission fee. Its very spooky to walk around - the dancing queen (who is also the Queen of Halloween) would love to hold a party in it!! It was "whole" until 1919, and then it just was left to go derelict - so sad.

If you enlarge this picture by double clicking, you will see it has a very prestigous neighbour - Bolsover Castle - also owned by English Heritage.

How grand it must have been in it's day.
Forgot to mention in my post that T has gone to stay with Grandma for a couple of days, we didn't leave him Home Alone!

Intriguing indeed...... I would love to have been there with a camera. Think the closet Goth in me would have liked to have been there at sunset and taken photos of the building against the sky.

What a pity that it's been left to go derelict. Like the arty shot through the doorway. x

Oh my! That is scandelous that it has been allowed to fall into disrepair...someone should revive it - pronto! Though the ruins look pretty impressive too... xxx

Such a shame, I've been to Bolsover Castle but missed out on this beauty.

I lived for many years in a small village called Scarcliffe near Bolsover - from child to teenager to young adult - and Bolsover was our nearest shopping place before Mansfield and Chesterfield. We used to visit the castle before it belonged to English Heritage - our other nearby places to visit were Hardwick Hall, Cresswell Crags and Clumber Park - I knew of Sutton Scarsdale Hall but had never in all those years visited it but finally managed it a few years ago and isn't it wonderful? I can just imagine a halloween party there - it does have an intriguing atmosphere.

It's such a shame that places like that are left to go to wrack and ruin. My sister lives in Ashby de la Zouch and Ashby Castle is much the same, just a shell really now. But it's great to wander around it and let your imagination go wild thinking about what went on in there in its day!
