The East Yorkshire Waggoners

At Sledmere House, they have a little museum in the car park that is dedicated to the East Yorkshire Wagonners .  You can visit this museum (and the cafe) for free.  It is a really moving place as it features all of the men who served in the Waggoners - real life "War Horse"., in the first world war.

There are cases full of medals and very moving letters displayed.  As well as the horror of war, it made me realise how the area would have suffered with so many of its farm hands away at war.
Along the main road is a monument to the Wolds Wagonners .
Each facet is engraved depicting different scenes and aspects of the wagonners journey.

It is an amazing piece of work.

What an interesting story and wonderful photos. I bet you spent ages just reading and looking at the photos. The memorial is fascinating - I off to follow your link to find out more about those wonderfully brave waggoners:)

That's a beautiful memorial, and looks like an interesting museum. I always felt so sorry for the horses, conscripted from their owners and flung into war. Poor things. But then so many men died too - it is all so terrible.

I love that post, you brought back many memories for me. My Gran lived a few miles from Sledmere and on Sunday visits we used to walk after lunch to the Wagoners Memorial and be told stories of the war. It's such a fitting tribute to those brave men.
