I almost forgot to show you our visit to Audley End House near Saffron Walden in Essex. We called on our way home from Kent. Yet another place ticked off my list!
The house was a lot older than I imagined it would be. Apparently it used to be about 4 times bigger too! We had a guided tour around the house which was great - no photos allowed though. They have a huge collection of stuffed birds. In the Victorian era they were collectors pieces and you could send for them flat packed from all corners of the earth and then you got your own taxidermist to stuff them!
You were allowed to take photos in the kitchens and servants quarters though.
They have lovely formal gardens and a great organic kitchen garden.
It is looked after by English Heritage and well worth a look in if you are passing.
What else can I say?
This place looks amazing!
A most interesting place, which I am ashamed to say I have never visited, although we lived fairly near there when I was a child. Maybe it wasn't open then? Anyway, it looks beautiful, and I love your photos of the kitchens, with all those copper pans!
What a stunning building. I love all the white linen, and the walled garden (sigh).
I loved the first picture looking through the arched door, it made you want to walk in. The kitchens are amazing. I love all the china lined up neatly. And you would die to have a garden with all the fresh produce to pick every day. If I'm passing that way I will visit.
The colour of that geranium is stunning. I always enjoy looking the downstairs of these places and the kitchen and walled gardens. The building itself looks wonderful:)
you were round the corner and i didnt know! glad you enjoyed the visit and the holiday....that place was amazing x
so sorry i missed your news about the degree results (been a bit out of the loop).... you must be thrilled....arent these kids wonderful?
Imagine having to be the one who had to get all that linen clean and whiter than white!
You must have known you were rich if you had your own taxidermist!
