Wentworth Castle

With both time and funds being in short supply this Bank Holiday Monday, we decided to make good use of our season ticket to Wentworth Castle Gardens which are at Stainborough (and not Wentworth!). We discovered a Medieval weekend was underway, and so had a good look around the tents and displays.

These two made bows and arrows, and lovely leather pouches. They belong to a reenactment society and everything was made just as it would have been in medieval times.

My favourite bit was the food tent, although sadly they were only making food for themselves. The smells wafting around the tent were gorgeous. Home made loaves and tons of herbs.
The lady chopping the herbs told me that in medieval times, they loved herbs, and often the rest of the food was just something to contain the herbs. For example, she was making a yeast pancake batter that was going to be fried with all the herbs that she was chopping.

They must have had fantastic digestion!
She was doing all of her cooking on the fire. The guy stoking the fire had the best job today - it was FREEZING!!!

This lady certainly was keeping warm under her layers!
Here are my 2 Knights in shining armour.

I'll show you around the gardens later. xx

Great photos - I love the last one. I have several similar ones myself from days out at castles.

Your post made me feel nostalgic - I haven't had a day out like that in ages as my two are all grown up now.
Love Kathy xxx

Glad you didn't let the match result spoil the weekend.
I love the bowls in the food tent, I must try and use more fresh herbs!

Love the last photo, it made me laugh!
I don't live that far from the Battle of Bosworth Centre and still haven't been to it! It's on my 'must do' list....along with 'win the Lottery' !

I'd have loved this, wish I'd known it was on. The medieval pottery is beautiful, I've got a few pieces of it that I've bought at events at the Weald & Downland Museum. It was a really cold day though, we went up to Derwent and it was bitter.

Could you eat any of the food? Sounds exciting! I love things like this. I remember going to see a jousting tournament when I was a child and going to St Fagans in Wales and Plymouth Plantation in the US which kind of reminds me of this a little... Such fun! xxx
