Today, I attended the Spring Council meeting of the South Yorkshire federation branch of the Womens Institute. This was held in the gorgeous Art Deco hotel - The Earl of Doncaster, a fabulous building with some great Art Deco features.
We listened to some of the issues of the WI in our region which was a bit of an eye opener, and in part very humorous. A lot of it put me in mind of a Julie Walters sketch!
They had some great little stalls and I came away with a new chutney to try, a chocolate fudge cake and several 2nd hand books!
We had a very lovely lunch, and then it was on to the highlight of the event......
A talk by the wonderful Costume Historian, Gillian Stapleton entitled "Undressing Mr Darcy". Gillian has probably the best job in the whole world. She advises films about historical costumes, hand sews all the costumes for her talks, and gets to undress, garment by garment, the very lovely Mr Darcy - who on this occasion was even more handsome than Colin Firth. As well as being extremely funny and highly entertaining, the talk was historically educational. Gillian and her accomplice - who I think was called Oliver - read us passages from newspapers from the period and quotes from times too.
I couldn't get close enough to take great photos. He looked utterly magnificent in his costume and top hat......
Oh dear ... I thought I left a comment here just now but it's disappeared. I wonder if I left it on the wrong post.
Thanks for yours. I am looking forward to seeing you soon. I got your message about your friend. It will be nice to see what I inspired the children to get up to LOL :o)
Had a bit of a catch up with your stuff Diane. I played Morningtown Ride while I looked at photos of Oxford and had a good read down
Sending love and hugs
There's no holding you back is there? Any self respecting lady would swoon at such a sight!
Great pics ... thanks for sharing! Swoon! Swoon!
You are very good keeping your readers happy with such excellent pics - especially the last one!
Clicked onto that last photo to enlarge it- just for the costume you understand [what ? erm ! no costume ? okay ! wanted a better gawp at that gorgeous hairy chest ]Thank you Diane for bravely going where no other WI member would-putting your followers first and standing up to take a photo- it was so worth it ! xx
You are such a hoot! Loved this post!
I am actually FROM Doncaster and have never been in the place! My sister is in the Doncaster WI, so I bet she was there! The WI is obviously definitely not all Jam and Jerusalem!
too hairy for me!
lovely building though.
Great post, love that hotel it's so fancy!
Bee happy x
Ooooo I am so toying with joining the WI. Looks like good fun. My sister and her hubby spent their wedding night at The Earl of Doncaster, it is lovely isn't it.
I don't know what to marcel at most, the fab lighting or Mr Darcy's chest!
Glad you enjoyed your day, all sounds very interesting.
The View from here is just Lovely...

Such trials you put yourself thru... just for us !!
Working on Sep 11th...I have a shirt as huge as that with an extremely fine colloar - I always think of it as my Mr Darcy shirt and it hangs on a hook by my bed awaiting a Mr Darcy of my own! I got it in a carrier bag of linens!
That;s it.......i'm off to join the WI!
And who isn't in love with Mr. Darcy!!! What a great time! Thanks for your comment on my site and you should really give embroidery a try! It is really fun and easy and really inexpensive to do. I'd be happy to give you any long distance help I can!!
Great pictures of the Earl, I first visited the hotel more years ago than I care to remember!
Some really good music nights there back in the 60's.
Brilliant! What a great job that lady has! That would make a good TV prog - I'm sure there'd be lots of viewers - undressing heroes. Abby x
That's sorted then, you have the hairy one and I'll take Colin!
Your WI looks great fun I must say. x
of course it was all done with the very best journalistic intent I am sure!!!
oh, I'll be chuckling til lunctime over this post...!
Next time you go count me in. I am only in the next county, for such a view I would travel miles. Well, apart from that it sounded very educational too!
What a great advertisement for the W.I. I think there'll be lots of new members signing up after this post.
I can see you all had a great time dressing and undressing the handsome Mr Darcy:)
The lengths you go to keeping us happy readers - I commend you!
surely only you could find a Mr Darcy stripper Diane....and at a WI event! if thats what goes on i might just join. you absolutely must go to Bath, you will love it. At every corner you will expect a carriage and Colin Firth to alight in that outfit and hat... or Captain Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds)in Persuasion, my fave adaptation. will send address...how exciting x
LOL at all the ladies who said that he's too much hairy, ha ha ha!
I do agree!!!! :D
The hotel place looked very beautiful. And isn't 'Mr. Darcy' a character from that story Pride and Prejudice or something? I think he is, I think that story was written by this girl named Jane Austen. I'm not real big on her stories, but it was cool seeing pictures of the hotel there. It was very beautiful. Hopefully someday I can go and visit some of the beautiful places in England. I would love to visit it someday and my first order of business when I get there-- go see Abbey Road Studios, as I'm a big Beatles fan, and if possible, I'd love to live there someday. All I can do right now is dream......
not VERY macho with the old hand on the hip!!!
but sweet to look at lol
I want that job !
You know, my grand parents were from Lancashire but before them, Glossop & Yorkshire !
You have two choices when it comes to seeing a male stripper. You can go out to a club and see many at one time or you can hire one to come to a private party. There are so many different agencies that you can hire these performers for a night. When you do have one come to the home, you should make some preparations first before they come. buff butlers newcastle
Every club has their own set of rules, so it can be confusing when you're allowed to do one thing one place and not at another place.
As for the dancer that's confusing you, I am not sure if she is telling the truth when she says, "I never do this."
Most of the time, I am telling the truth when I say that to someone, but on occasion, it rolls off my tongue to keep pandering to my customer.
Sorry if this confuses you more. Strip clubs really are a confusing place to meet a lady who might really be into you. buff butlers brighton
