Tuesday the 5th June was the holiday day for the Queens Diamond Jubilee, but more importantly it was the young mans birthday. However our plans for the day were thwarted by the torrential rain that we awoke to - so plan B was to go to Truro. We took shelter in the Cathedral which has a surprising link to where we live in South Yorkshire.
Although Wentworth Church (featured many times previously in my blog) is smaller, there are many similarities.
Anyway, once back outside, we discovered that the day had completely changed (as it has a tendency to do in Cornwall!) and the blue skies were back, so we consulted the map and decided to head down to Flushing. Flushing is my newest favourite place on earth.
It was named Flushing by the Dutch engineers who came from Flushing in the Netherlands to build the Quays here. It sits on the banks of the river Fal, directly across from Falmouth.
The houses - small and large - have such history related to the seafaring activities of their previous occupants.
The village had come together to celebrate the Jubilee and each house had decorated . We loved this painting on one house of the Queen and one of the corgi's surfing.
We explored further to the end of the village and found a couple of beautiful and very empty beaches.
There are some stunning huge houses along here. These were built for the captains of the the Falmouth Packet Ships and are very grand.
We spent time beach combing and skimming stones and generally exploring this fabulous little place.
As it was the Jubilee holiday day, we were all wearing something with the Union Jack on. Here am I in my fab Union Jack leggings (seen here rolled up to catch the rays)
The main street through the village has houses painted in Neopolitan ice cream colours.
All of the occupants of the village were at their gorgeous little street party. It was lovely to see them all flocking to it carrying a tin or two of home made goodies. The atmosphere was brilliant.
I fell in love with Flushing and would love to stay in a cottage here some time.

Looks like fun. Glad it turned out a nice day for his birthday.
It looks a interesting place, I love the main street with all its pretty houses. You were luckier than most of us with your weather:) Hope the young man had a great birthday.
I can see why you have fallen in love with Flushing. It's an incredibly pretty place that clearly has a great community spirit. Glad that the day worked out well. Jx
Looks like a wonderful day with no rain. I love the ice cream coloured houses.

Festival dates announced for next year already and you can buy early bird tickets. They have a facebook page. No Direction Home Festival. It really was fab albeit a little (very) muddy.
Hey there, Diane, from a fellow Cornwall lover !
You've shared two places I don't yet know. We've not been in the cathedral in Truro - probably because we usually head to the big city when we're desperate for Pizza Express and some respite from Camper's rain !! But one day we'll pop into the cathedral. And we haven't visited Flushing either - but now we HAVE to, as it looks and sounds so lovely!

Another place to add to my "to visit" list!
I need to live in that pink house at the Quayside in Flushing - I did not know this until five minutes ago! xCathy
Great post Diane - love the pics and your patriotic leggings too. Grim here at the moment, very green and wet!! x
Looks like someone had a great birthday. Love those leggings!
Belated happy birthday wishes to your lovely young man.
I think you have already started to plan another holiday in Flushing. What a beautiful place it is.
