Anyway, It was a bit wild and windy, and not like July at all! But we did indeed climb Ilkley Moor without our hats (Translation for any one not from the county!).

I had never heard of this song until one of my friends moved oop north to live with a boyfriend in Keighley. Definitely not well known in the south.

just you in yorkshire i think.....not sung in school halls in london ....but had a northern gran so know it well. damn....just told him and hes whistling it VERY loudly. x (hes from yorkshire)

No, we didn't sing it at school! Some of Paul's ancestors come from Ilkley and nearby Menston. He remembers, as a child, being taken to see the Sooty factory there. Looks like a super walk:)
It was definitely not sung in Wales though I did hear it several times on the radio, probably courtesy of Wilfred Pickles...
I didn't sing it at school down South either but I am familiar with the song. I loved the pictures that accompanied it!

We even sang about the moors in what was then Rhodesia so it is obviously world wide. I have never been there. but what a beautiful spot. T'other Diane
We sang it in the East Riding......... with minor alterations to the words, I seem to remember the words "without your trousers on"......... ;O)
You certainly get around a bit - did you sing it in the car on the way there - I bet you did - wild and windy it may have been but it looks lovely.
We used to sing it when there were no Yorkshire folk around to hear, just in case they might be offended....!!
I used to live in the village of Addingham, just up the road from Ilkley, so the moors were a favourite walk on Sunday afternoons. By eck, thy photos bring back memories.....it was back in the 70's.

Yes we in t'East Riding sung where the ducks play football too. Lovely trip down memory lane, years since I've been on t'moor or sung that song.
I'm from Cheshire but have always known that song and was certainly singing along as I read your post:):)
When I want to school all the kids would just be singing the most popular songs that were on the radio or just mainstream. I guess I'm from a different generation then you.
