Did we wander through wild flower meadows?
No. For some years now Sheffield council have been sowing wildflowers on grass verges and where they have pulled down houses on estates etc. I notice now that it is catching on around the country - its a brilliant idea, and generally re plants itself for the year after too. This patch was buzzing with bees which is no bad thing either.

Anything to help the bees has got to be a good thing. And it does look very pretty.

Beautiful! I noticed the same kind of wild flowers as we went up to the city centre here a few days ago - they have covered the empty land near the Emma Bridgewater factory where all the terraced houses were pulled down with a sea of purply-blue:)

What a wonderful idea - it looks absolutely beautiful and must be alive with insects and butterflies. Well done Sheffield Council.
It looks really pretty, much better than looking out on an eyesore when houses have been pulled down. I've just been catching up on your posts. Glad you had such a good time in Cornwall. We made it to St.Ives this year, the first time I've been.
Lovely wildflowers, wish our local council would adopt this idea instead of the uniform arrangements of hybrid flowers that they change every season - wildflowers would attract so many butterflies and bees. Maybe I should write and ask them!

Our council has done the same here for the last two years and I am totally amazed by it. Ours are very pink, orange and red themed and are glorious!
Those wild flowers look wonderful, it's so nice to see them appearing around the country.

Lots of the wild flowers around Sheffield are planted by the Green Estate, it's an initiative that is run on the Manor Estate, google Manor Lodge Or Green Estate Sheffield. I work for a large Sheffield employer and our Department has done 3 volunteer days at the Manor Lodge over the past year or so, it's a great place, they sell wild flower seeds, plant wild flowers and living roofs all over the country, last time I was there they were telling us about the planting they were doing at the Olympic village. (Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know).

It's lovely how these meadows are being planted in otherwise unused spaces.
There was a programme on at the beginning of the year called Bees,Butterflies and Blooms where Sarah Raven was trying to get councils to do this and to change from their formal planting to wildflowers. It was filmed last year and Harrogate council let her plant up one of the beds in a park and it was amazing how many insects there were on it, yet their bed next to it had none. One idea which I thought was really good was having wildflowers in the central reservations in towns, where they usually have those window boxes of bedding on top. There was no maintenance, unlike the continual watering of the boxes. It didn't actually work very well in the town it showed because it rained heavily when the seeds were sown and washed a lot away, but that council (can't remember where it was) said they would do it again this year.
I remember as a child being given flower seeds on school outings on train journeys to disperse of through the window on the journey
