Prayers on Sunday

In 1964 I joined the Methodist Sunday school in our village. I was given this children's prayer book. I loved the pictures in it back then, and still do to this day. The children on the front cover looked like my brother and sister and I.

This was one of my favourites. I think it was because of the falling Autumn leaves. I also loved her plaits!

And I always wanted to find this beach. It reminds me now of many beaches I have visited in Cornwall - especially around the Falmouth area.

The prayer for summer is lovely.

When I was little, I hated going to bed in summer when it was still light - however this made me realise that it wasn't just my mums rule.

And this made me want a patchwork quilt.

But this one used to alarm me. They both have such fear on their faces (in my case, it would have been fear of the wrath of my mother for breaking the pot! ) But what a lovely little prayer.

What a lovely book and memories. You did well to keep it for all this time. I have nothing like that, just the bible that I had from my confirmation.

What a treasure you have from your childhood. These are such sweet prayers and the illustrations are such classic examples of the artwork for children's books at the time. I'm not a collector, but if I were, I'd choose to collect vintage illustrative art for children's books. Nice post, and thanks!

I went to a Methodist Sunday School too and loved it - I still go back and visit the Church and because they've known me since I was knee high to a grasshopper, they treat me like a celeb. They always comment on how Violet is the spitting image of me when I was her age.

Love your Sunday School prayer book - you've kept very good care of it and it's obvious how much you've treasured it.

What a lovely book to treasure. I was christened at a methodist chapel and remember having to dress up and have my shoes polished when we children all lined up to sing for parents and congregation at the anniversaries. When we moved to Derbyshire I went to a church school and sunday school - it was very different - we had to collect a stamp each time we attended and stick it in a book - I wonder what happened to that?:)

What a lovely prayer book, and you've still got it! I haven't got anything from my childhood, my mum through everything out when we moved house. I never went to Sunday School either, but did go to Mass every Sunday morning without fail., in my Sunday best!
