Sheffield was lucky enough to have Mr
JG Graves move from
Lincolnshire to become a watchmaker in the city. He stayed in the city and made a lot of money - from Mail Order of all things. When he died, he became a benefactor and donated money and a lot of his art collection as well as lots of wonderful land in the shape of parks and moorlands etc so that the people of Sheffield could enjoy these. What great gifts to give. One place that we had never really explored was
Blacka Moor - mainly because we usually whizz past it on our way out to
Chatsworth, but today we decided to have a walk around. I found this blog about
Blacka Moor, it has some great photos and is really interesting, but it does seem the moor is at the centre of lots of controversy.
The woodlands are great to walk around, and the moors have great views of the city down the valley.
Some of the walking is very steep. There is so much to explore. Its
weird to think that the railway tunnel runs under the moor too on the line from Sheffield to Manchester.
There are still pockets of ice and snow up here and yes, that snowball was headed my way!
We
didn't see any of the deer or stags that live up here, but we had a good energising walk. There are a couple of good pubs that we noted for future investigation, but my mind was set on a trip to
Grindleford station for half a pint (they do full pints too) of the best drink when you are out in the cold -or wet - proper
Horlicks.

Another good walk Diane. I know Grindleford, I've been there a few times.. but I don't know Blacka Moor. I haven't had Horlicks in years!!!

Looks as though you were higher up the moor than me today, I just went down Shorts Lane and climbed up to Lenny Hill then back down Strawberry Lee and Hallfield Farm. I was probably a bit earlier in the day than you as well:) Didn't see any snow but there were still patches of ice about. I've never seen the deer yet, I've seen B Baggins nose go up and then he takes off like a bullet which may have something to do with it:)

Arh Horlicks is a bit like marmite you either love it or hate it, sorry I don't like it, now if they had hot chocolate I could manage one of those! great walk Diane.

Well done going for an invigorating walk. The moors have a special beauty.
Great gifts indeed, I'm sure many people have enjoyed them over the years. I thought we'd seen the last of the snow for a while but it seems some is just too stubborn to shift. I've never been a lover of Horlicks, too milky for me.

What a super walk sounds like an interesting place - I've never been on it yet I must have been under it as I've been through the tunnel on the Sheffield - Manchester train many years ago:)
You should write a guide book on local walks! Horlicks is too milky for me. x
